In 1975, British artist Stuart Brisley made a performance at the Teatr Studio in the Palace of Culture and Science, Warsaw. This performance, titled Decision / Indecision, took place over six days, for three hours a day, during which time the artist covered his body with copious amounts of white and black paint while attempting to climb the wall of the studio; his subsequent account tells of how he became blinded and had to be guided by his collaborator, the photographer Leslie Haslam, who took the black and white photographs which serve as the visual remainder of the event.

These images and a short description were the prompts given to two groups of students embarking, separately, on a 3-day project – one comprised of Grafik students working in Warsaw at the Academy of Fine Arts, the other from Graphic Arts and Design here at Leeds Metropolitan University. Students worked in pairs to respond in their own choice of media to the themes evoked by the images and the description of Brisley’s performance. The tutor, Kiff Bamford, was able to travel to Warsaw thanks to the Erasmus link which exists between the two institutions. This link opens students and staff to opportunities of location and dislocation and, perhaps, the theme which runs through this exhibition: decision and indecision.
